What is the Bible?

The Bible is the book for all people, for all time. It is made up of sixty-six different books of various types, including books of law, historical books, books of poetry, books of prophecy, biographies, and formal letters. About 40 different human writers (2 Peter 1:21) contributed to the Bible, which was written over a period of about 1500 years. All the Bible is “God-breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16) which means that God inspired the human authors so that they wrote exactly what God wanted them to write.

God is faithful is word is perfect (Psalm 33:4). He promises us his word will never pass away, and so we can fully trust his Word, just as we can fully trust him.

Historically, this is verifiable too, as we can go to museums and see ancient Bibles and manuscripts of the Bible that are more than 2000 years old, and we can see with our own eyes how God’s Word has remained the same (Codex Sinaticus, Dead Sea Scrolls, etc.).

The Bible is God’s story. It starts at creation and goes through the history of the God’s people all the way to prophecies of things that are yet to come and into heaven and eternity.

The Bible has two main parts: The Old Testament, and the New Testament. Jesus is the central character in the Bible—the whole book is really about Him. The Old Testament predicts His coming and sets the stage for His entrance into the world. The New Testament describes His coming and His work to bring salvation to our sinful world.
