Miracles of Jesus

The Bible records more than 50 specific miracles of Jesus during His life on earth. He raised the dead, healed sick people, multiplied food to feed the people, gave sight to the blind, commanded nature, knew the thoughts of people, saw events that would happen in the future, and many other things. Here are a few of those miracles and why they are important.

Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man (Luke 5:17-26)

One day while He was teaching, the Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there, having come from every village of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present for Him to heal the sick. Just then, men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus.

When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.

When Jesus saw their faith, He said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.” The Pharisees and teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So He said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”

Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.” (Luke 5:17-26)

This amazing miracle consists of three things that set Jesus apart from anyone else: (1) He has the authority to forgive sins. (2) He knew the thoughts of the people in the crowd. (3) He healed a paralyzed man. The Gospel is full of miracles of Jesus. Jesus did not perform miracles to show off. All the miracles have meaning. He performed them to establish who He was and what He was capable of doing and to demonstrate through actions that He is God and not just by words alone.

Jesus Heals a Blind Man (Mark 10:46-52)

As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man named Bartimaeus (the son of Timaeus) was sitting by the roadside begging.

When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” He called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to Him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” “Lord, I want to see,” he replied. Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. (Mark 10:46-52)

This miracle is more than just a healing. Imagine being in the place of the blind man when Jesus asks you, “What do you want me to do for you?” He has the power to solve all your problems if you just have faith.

Jesus Casts Out Demons (Luke 8:26-39)

They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. When Jesus stepped ashore, He was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time, this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house but had lived in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at His feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.

Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss. A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and He gave them permission. When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. Then all the people of the Gerasene region asked Jesus to leave them because they were overcome with fear. So He got into the boat and left. The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with Him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over the town how much Jesus had done for him. (Luke 8:26-39)

This miracle demonstrates that Jesus has authority over demons, and even the demons were afraid of Jesus. The next miracle occurred after Jesus healed the man mentioned above.

Jesus Heals a Sick Woman and Raises a Young Girl from the Dead (Luke 8:40-56)

When Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed Him, for they were all expecting Him. Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with Him to come to his house because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.

As Jesus was on His way, the crowds almost crushed Him. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. She came up behind Jesus and touched the edge of His cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. “Who touched me?” Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.” But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.” Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at His feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched Him and how she had been instantly healed. Then He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.” While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”

Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe and she will be healed.” When He arrived at the house of Jairus, He did not let anyone in with Him except Peter, John, and James, and the child’s father and mother. Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.” They laughed at Him, knowing that she was dead. But He took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!” Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. Her parents were astonished, but He ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened. (Luke 8:40-56)

In the passage above, Jesus performed two great miracles: He healed a sick woman just by her touching the hem of His garment, and He brought a dead girl back to life. What can Jesus do for you? I encourage you to read the other miracles of Jesus directly from the Bible.
